Did Taylor Call His Dad During the A&M Game?

Posted by Farmer Ted on November 21st, 2010 under Football

By now everyone in the college football world is aware that Bo Pelini lit up Taylor Martinez on the sideline during one of Bo’s major meltdowns during the A&M game.

This one was particularly vicious, and the timing was odd — Martinez had just returned from the locker room after presumably having his ankle worked on during the second quarter.

ABC showed the very tail end of the reaming at the 8:11 mark, and then about a minute later ABC replayed almost the entire thing.

With a little amateur lip reading and jumping back and forth, it appears that Bo stormed up to Martinez and said this:

“If you fucking call your dad on the fucking field during a game again it’ll be the last fucking thing you ever do. Now get your fucking ass  [out/down/out of?] here mother fucker.”

Note that Bo also popped back for a few more words right after the first berating (and right before ABC showed the replay) at the 8:03 mark. We couldn’t see what Bo said that time, but we did clearly see what Taylor muttered in Bo’s general direction after he walked away:

“Fucking bitch.”

The video below captures most of this, but is too grainy to be very helpful — if someone has better video please share.

  1. Figured Mart’s mouth got him trouble.

Kid is a phenomenal talent on the field, gotta have him in there. And he’ll grow up some during his time here. But he needs to grab his sack (no pun intended Aggies) and not whine to his father after every single thing doesn’t go his way. His dad is worse than he is though.

Does that excuse Pelini from handling it the way he did? No. Could’ve had the dressing down in the locker room at halftime, after the game, whatever.

    That being said…great job T-Mart.

  2. You wonder why Martinez would call his dad during games when he’s got such a strong father figure in Bo….

  3. Nice lip reading, that looks right. We just endured the Chernobyl of our season…

  4. The whole exchange doesn’t surprise me one bit…Bo should’ve had that yell session in the locker room at halftime though….but, that isn’t the Bo way of doing things.

If T-Mart did call his dad in the locker room from his cell phone, WTF for? I know he’s a 18 or 19 year old kid and most 18 or 19 year olds aren’t very mature, but I’m wondering how Bo found out about that (or at least who told him T-Mart did it). But, it’s just another episode in the Bo School of Chewing Out Someone From The Sideline, Volume III.

I think it was a post from Mister Mike from the game thought thread, but if Bo was going to run this spread read offense and T-Mart is the only QB on this team that can run it (not sure about Brion Carnes) and he goes down, everyone knew this offense was going back to 2009. With Jamal Turner and (hopefully) Bubba Starling showing up to campus soon, we can build depth at QB for running the spread and throw Cody Green to WR or TE…just my 2 cents.

  5. Oh my.

  7. Uh oh. WWL says Chancellor is nonplussed.

“I think it was very unfortunate,” Perlman said, “and I think it’s something we’ll have to address with Bo.”

  8. If my son had ever tried to call me during a game – well, I can’t even imagine it.

  11. Ag,

The dynamic of T-Mart and his father in regards to how Jr receives any kind of criticism, good or bad, is…well…weird, to say the least.

For Husker fans that are familiar with the whole Harrison Beck saga regarding how his parents viewed their son, take that and multiply it and you’d have an idea of what T-Mart’s father (and to a lesser extent his son) can be like.

Was Pelini right for laying into the kid like a $2.00 hooker on the sidelines? Nope.

  12. Fascinating. If my son called me during a game, I bet they’d yank his scholarship – and I think I’d be on the coach’s side in that action.

I didn’t see anything in that exchange that would help Martinez become a better football player or a better man. Rest assured, TO never did that in his 25 years as head coach.

My guess is that TO will have a convo with Bo and he’ll learn from it, and Bo will be apologizing to Martinez and his family.

  18. Horn,

While I don’t appreciate T-Mart’s antics one bit, I would agree with that. This is something that should’ve been handled in the locker room.

  19. Rumor has it that T-Mart has left the team. We’ll be following this one.

  20. Christ.

  21. If Martinez does in fact walk, I’ll bet dollar to donut that the NCAA steps in and doesn’t penalize Martinez a transfer year based on Pelini’s actions being alleged to be just the tip of mistreatment endured by Martinez.

  22. It is very possible TM called his father from the locker room to tell him that the X rays where negative or a wide variety of other legitimate possible reasons. It is not like he was in the locker room just on his own. he was there for a legitimate medical reason. Any parent seeing their child being taken to the locker room in need of medical care would definitely want to receive a heads up about their child’s condition…

  23. Mangino got fired for less than this. Of course he wasn’t 9-2. Still really embarrassing…

Pellini is a cowardly punk bully. A disgrace to the game and humanity. Let’s also not forget that brother Carl is also on video assaulting a cameraman on the field after the game. Guess Dr. Tom decided he’s fine with thugs on the field and on the sideline.

No, Mangino did more than this. And Carl Pelini isn’t on video, but all reports say was that he just knocked a portable camera piece off of the guy’s camera. But still, the Pelinis really do need to settle down. If he can’t/wow’t, Nebraska probably should move on.

    Ok… here’s what I’ve heard, and where I’ve heard it….

My friend’s cousin gets tickets from a starter on the huskers. That starter (identity protected) texted my friend, and told him that Taylor called his dad at half, and basically when Bo reamed Taylor he said… paraphrasing here… We’re family…. we take care of our own. Taylor then skipped all team meetings today, and the starter said Taylor had been kicked off the team by Bo. I’ve also heard Taylor quit the team. I don’t know which, if either are true… but my local news station has said they’ve heard the rumor, and they’re trying to track it down. They said its all heresay, but that we could find out tomorrow, as its assumed media day will be moved ahead one day because of this weeks Friday night game.

  27. What is the big deal here? Bo overreacted! Tmagic called his Dad when he was in there for the injury probably to tell him the xrays were negative. He wasnt on the sideline talking on the phone or anything. Bo getting on the refs for repeated bad calls to me is acceptable but yelling at Martinez in that manner is not. Just like when he yelled at Legate for helping Burkhead when the Iowa St. guy was cranking on his neck.. Bo you need to cool it a bit with the players…

    GBR

  28. Is Taylor getting advice from Eric Crouch?? I just saw the ESPN 30 in 30 documentary on OU’s Marcus Dupree and this reminds me of it somewhat. Switzer ended up regretting how he handled the most talented player he ever coached and Dupree is now driving a truck and regretting he ever left OU. At the time, he felt he was being abused and he got terrible advice on how to handle it.

    Hope this ends better…

I am a huge Bo Pelini fan. That said; these are just kids Bo! Taylor needs to be treated with respect when on National Tv, it does nothing for the program, yourself and especially Martinez for verbally destroying him. It makes Bo look bad, our program look bad and it can’t do anything positive for T. Magic. I just pray that they work things out and that Bo treats him with the respect he deserves.
If he called his dad, so what…not sure it’s a rule, but address it later and no need for all F words. Yeah I use that word a lot my self but not to hurt anyone and I am sure that if what was published was said, T. Magic has to hurt by it.
Tom Osborn won a lot of games and championships without the cursing and with a lot less talent in many of those years. I like the fire that Bo demonstrates, but channel it in a positive way. This was the first time I was embarrassed to have Bo as our coach.
Still love ya Bo, but damn, Taylor is our man and he is playing hurt and I still feel more comfortable with a 70% Taylor vs 100% Green. No offense Green but you’re lacking that “it” factor that T Magic has.

  30. [...] Better Off Red | Did Taylor Call His Dad During the A&M Game? [...]

  31. Bo is a bitch. Id quit to. He had shown he is good enough to play anywhere he wants. People say how much of a hardass Bo is but he takes it to far. Have him yell at me our my son like that. Id knock his big ass noise off.

  32. Well seems Bo and his problem is historic. This is just again another example of that. Coach has no class. Two great defenses in last night’s games just A&M was a little better. He told the ref “F— You!” By contrast Mike Sherman is a professional years coaching in the NFL and Green Bay NFC champions shows. A&M got more bad calls in its game against Baylor and he did not try and chase down the refs after the game. The guy is classless and is hurting the classy image of NU.

  33. You guys are getting reports a little off. Taylor martinez was texting his dad while in the locker room getting taped up about his ankle that on television looked like it could have potentially been broken with what happened. Wouldn’t any of you like a simple “im okay, and the tests are negative” text or call from your son if you were the dad? The problem is that supposedly there is already bad blood between Taylor’s dad and Pelini with some prior words and also that pelini has a “absolutely no cellphones” during the game rule which is understandable. This however was still no reason at all for Pelini to act like he did and he clearly has anger issues that are a complete detriment to the public image of what has been Nebraska football for the past decades. And then add Carl Pelin’s camera incident! This is all too sad that it is happening to Nebraska! And don’t say for a moment that this doesn’t effect recruiting! It even can go as far as effecting potential student enrollment from just regular students! That is why it bothers Harvey Perlman so much because he knows this goes way beyond just the football program!

  34. What I want to know most of all is who was the idiot that felt he needed to go tattle on Martinez to pelini that he was texting. I can only imagine some assistant trainer going up trying to score points with Bo: “Coach Bo, Coach Bo, Taylor was texting his daddy again and I tried to tell him not to but he wouldn’t listen” all the while hoping that he gets promoted from his current jock strap gathering duties!

Years later history will show that the demise and continued destruction of Nebraska football all began by an assistant trainer trying to get out of jock strap duties! The pelini brother’s will be in prison for attempted murder of someone. Tom Osborne will finally have croaked from heart failure after what happened. Harvery Perlman will be in intensive care in a severe coma from the attempted murder by the Pelini brothers, and to top it all off LARRY THE FREAKING CABLE GUY will be the new head coach and athletic director! You think I’m joking but just wait and see my friends! Just wait and see!

    I like a good rant!

This season of promise has turned into a really mixed bag for the Huskers.
I’ve always liked Nebraska. All those “Games of the Century” against OU, I don’t think I ever rooted for OU against the Huskers. Always liked Tom Osborne.
    Not sure they deserve this.
Good for the chancellor to speak out, though. That sends a clear message that some standards still apply.

  37. Mike,
    That was hilarious!

  38. Let’s git her done…

  39. As the parent of a top 2012 QB I can say without a doubt my son will not be camping at UN this summer. Just scratched them off the list. Very sad.

  40. VCL- If you are telling the truth then you owe to yourself and your son to understand the full story. That doesn’t excuse Pelini’s actions during the game but Martinez has some culpability in this too.

Look no further than the outpouring of support for Bo Pelini by the rest of the team.

  41. Keep it classy, Nebraska. Now I know why they feel there are too good for the Big 12.

  42. Most likely Martinez did deserve a sit down. Take it to the locker room and keep it there. Recruits see and hear what recruiters want them to see and hear. Pelini pulled a Mike Leach during a game in front of thousands. We didn’t have problem with what Leach did to James, but it was on the practice field where it belonged.

  43. VCL,

Please visit the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. Our head coach was Brett Favre’s coach! Did you know that?

And we have ice cream every Tuesday and Saturday nights.

  44. [...] (aside from the likelihood that he knows of his son’s status with the program)? Some lip reading suggests Pelini was cussing at Taylor on the sidelines for supposedly calling his father during the game. [...]

  45. PSYCHO BO needs to settle down. If I were Taylor, I would have cold cocked that pansy and showed him what a tail kicking was all about. Bo is a jerk and someone needs to crack him right across his mouth. Real tough guy, yelling at a kid. Try that in the ring tough guy, with someone that can rock your pathetic neanderthal skull.

    PSYCHO BO
    PYSCHO BO
    PSYCHO BO

  46. Rules and rules and if Martinez violated a team rule by calling his Father, he should be at the mercy of the coaching staff.

If you can’t play/live by the rules, go play for some other team.

    Figures….

  49. Thats not even close to what he said.

Taylor right before that was engaged in a conversation with Jay Norvell and a possible 4th string quarterback that may be needed. Taylor refused to put on the headset and help call plays for Cody and walked away from Norvell and the walk-on 4th string true freshman from Omaha Westside belittling him saying, “Good fucking luck.”

Pelini says “You don’t even fucking know what its like if the 4th stringer has to come in it’ll be the hardest fucking thing he’ll ever do. Get your fucking headset on.”

  50. Gary, I’m not sure what tape you’re watching.

Nice try, but the cat’s already out of the bag on this one.

  51. you should believe whatever the internet tells you

  52. Gary-

    Jay Norvell? This guy? http://www.soonersports.com/school-bio/jay_norvell.html

What the hell is he still doing on NU’s sideline? He was last spotted on a Husker sideline in 2006.

Oh wait…I got that off the internet so it must be false.

  53. Yeah, apparently it is bullshit. I didn’t even know who Jay Norvell was, but it does look like that’s what he’s saying.

  54. it certainly doesn’t look like what the author is stating

  55. [...] asked Monday morning whether there was any truth to the report that he had berated Taylor Martinez because Martinez had called or texted his father during the [...]

  56. Farmer Ted, excellent job with the lip reading. I think you pretty much have it, however I think he said “Mom and Dad” instead of just “Dad”. Then it all seems to fit quite nicely.

Still, this kind of berating could have waited for the locker room – it would have been much more effective with the peer pressure involved in a situation like that. I totally do not agree with Bo doing this on the sideline. And I am a Husker fan since birth, born and raised only 2 miles from Memorial Stadium. Go Huskers.

To Bo’s credit, he did let T-Magic back into the game after this. I don’t think I would have – his little baby ass would been riding the bench for the rest of the game – win or lose!

    Lordy … We’re a nation of wusses and girlie-men.

Martinez screwed up in public, so getting dressed down in public bothers me not.

I had coaches who would have had him do push-ups on the 50 yard line or wear his helmet backwards. And I’m betting Martinez leaves the phone in the locker room from now on.

I’m betting TO called Bo into his office Monday, ready to rip him a new one, and when he heard about the cell phone, told him he let Martinez off easy.

Eric Crouch might have made it in the NFL longer than three practices if Frank had slapped him instead of hugging him every time he went home crying.

I guess y’all would prefer that Bo take the team to Mamby-Pamby-ville for group hugs or maybe add aromatherapy candles to the locker room. Maybe fire Bo and hire Stuart Smalley to coach the team?

If you don’t want the coach to yell at you, then don’t screw up. And if you don’t want a coach who yells, then go watch synchronized swimming.

TO never looked at porn either……..

If my lip reading skills are any good it sure looks like bo ended with ” sit your fucking ass down”

  59. VCL,

Glad to hear that. I know how hard the search can be as I went through it several years back with my son. I can’t imagine better men for my son to play for than Coach Sherman and his staff. Best of luck in your search.

And I was kidding about the ice cream. But if that’s what it takes…. ;)

  60. On the other hand, my son is a top Defensive lineman for 2012 and we are still looking at and love NU. I love the intensity that Bo has.

If Martinez did what is reported, then I am fine with the public dressdown.

How do young kids get to understand authority? Make a mistake and pay the price.

    Taylor is paying the price.

  61. VCL,

You are an Aggie internet slug NOT a football dad- nice try
A&M is a great school, not a football school
They cant even sell out their stadium- with twice as many students as NU
When they sell out, it’s because the other team travels well
NU- top 3 in all time wins
    5 National Titles
    304 Consecutive Sell outs
    A program that matters
No NCAA cheating scandals- pay for play
You can probably get that at A&M if you put your hand out- was that way when I went there- So much for the Aggie Code of Honor- I will not lie, cheat or steal nor tolerate those that do.
A&M will always be Texas (tu’s) little brother- always the inferiority complex, begging for teasip scraps

  63. Get over it and move on. Other coaches out there have tempers worse than Bo’s. I guess no one is talking about the couch who told his players to “act like effing winners” at half time, and a TV camera was behind him.

  64. Assuming he was texting/calling from the locker room, I’m with GSP Jr on this one…

I’d much rather have my sons (and I have 4) playing on a team with a coach that WILL call them on the carpet for violating team rules than a coach who would rather turn a blind eye in the hopes of keep my boys happy.

Will that thrashing make him a better man? If it gets the point across that the rules are the rules then yes, that lesson makes him a better man. On the other hand it sounds like Daddy will continue to protect him and prevent any such lesson from being learned…in that case, I feel awful for the retail clothing store manager that hires “T-Magic” after his college career is over. That poor manager is going to have a wealth of lessons to teach that fallen prima-donna!
